1 The Program
PC-Fortune is comprised of three files: PCFR and PCFI constitute the
text database and PCF.EXE is the program which extracts an item from
the text database and displays it. You execute PC-Fortune by typing
A> PCF [-s itemno] [n]
where [...] means optional. itemno is an optional item number between 0
and the number of items in the database. (The shareware version
contains over 2,500 items, the registered version over 10,500 items.)
If you do not ask for a specific number, an item is chosen at random
without repeating an earlier selection, until all items have been
displayed. n is the number of items to display--by default, one item is
displayed.
Each item is displayed in a window on your screen--it remains displayed
until you press a key.
You can run PC-Fortune from a diskette or a hard disk. A common use is
to run it from a hard disk as part of your AUTOEXEC.BAT startup
sequence, so it runs every time you turn on your computer.
2 Running PC-Fortune from a Diskette
To run PC-Fortune from a diskette, the three files PCF.EXE, PCFR and
PCFI should be on the diskette--you can use the distribution diskette,
or preferably, a copy of it. Run it just as indicated above.
3 Running PC-Fortune from a Hard Disk
For regular use though, we suggest you install PC-Fortune on your hard
disk and run it from that disk--response is generally a lot faster.
The program file, PCF.EXE may be placed in any directory, but the name
of this directory will have to appear in your PATH environment variable
so that DOS will know where to find the program. The database files,
PCFI and PCFR may be placed in the same directory or in a separate one.
When PCF runs it checks the current working directory to see if the
database files are there--unless you are running from a diskette, they
1
Running PC-Fortune from a Hard Disk 2
probably won't be. You tell PCF which directory to look in by setting
the environment variable PCF to the name of the directory where the
files PCFI and PCFR are located. The following example shows you what
to do.
Say the letter of your hard drive is H:, and you want to put the
program file in an existing directory on the drive called BIN and you
want to put the two database files in a new directory called JAYAR. Put
the distribution diskette in drive A:, copy the program file to
directory BIN, create the new directory and copy the database files to
it:
A> COPY PCF.EXE H:\BIN
A> MKDIR H:\JAYAR
A> COPY PCFI H:\JAYAR
A> COPY PCFR H:\JAYAR
In this example, it's quite likely the directory BIN would already be
in your PATH, but assume it isn't. The next steps are then to modify
PATH so it contains the BIN directory and to set the PCF environment
variable so that it points to the directory of the database files. This
should be done by appending instructions to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so
that it happens every time you start your computer. You can do this by
typing the following:
COPY H:\AUTOEXEC.BAT+CON > NUL
PATH=%PATH%;H:\BIN
SET PCF=H:\JAYAR
PCF
<F6>
where <F6> means press function key F6. Execute your modified
AUTOEXEC.BAT by rebooting your computer or typing
H> AUTOEXEC
The fourth line in the above sequence (PCF) is optional--it will cause
PC-Fortune to execute automatically from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This
means that it will run every time you start up your computer; leave
this line out if you don't want it to.
4 PC-Fortune and Microsoft Windows
PC-Fortune is a DOS program but it can be run conveniently from a DOS
window in MS Windows. The file PCF.PIF is included on the distribution
diskette for this purpose. It assumes you will put the executable,
PCF.EXE, in the directory C:\BIN and the two database files in the
PC-Fortune and Microsoft Windows 3
directory C:\JAYAR. If this is not the case, you can edit PCF.PIF to
reflect your setup. The PIF file runs PC-Fortune with an argument of 5;
i.e., it displays five items--you can change this as well.
To run under Windows, copy PCF.PIF to your Windows directory (say,
C:\WINDOWS). Then create a PC-Fortune program item in the group of your
choice; specify the command line as C:\WINDOWS\PCF.PIF (or wherever you
put the PIF file); it is not necessary to specify a working directory.
Clicking this program item will then pop up a DOS box that runs
PC-Fortune. You can also use the Clipboard to copy items that appear in
the box. It is not necessary to set the environment variable PCF if you
run PC-Fortune from Windows in this manner.

Definition of Shareware 7
6 Definition of Shareware
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you
are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details--some
request registration while others require it, some specify a maximum
trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple right
to continue using the software to an updated program with printed
manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as
stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In
both cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference
is in the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the
right to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or
to a specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is
low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back
guarantee--if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
ASP OMBUDSMAN POLICY
This program is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a
shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member
directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you
resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide
technical support for members' products. Please write to the ASP
Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe
message via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.
How to Register 8
7 How to Register
PC-Fortune is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the
user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but
please do not give it away altered or as part of another system. The
essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide
incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. If you
find this program useful and find that you are using PC-Fortune and
continue to use PC-Fortune after a reasonable trial period, you must
make a registration payment of US$24.95 (Cdn$29.00) to JAYAR Systems.
The registration fee will license one copy for use on any one computer
at any one time.
See the file REGISTER.DOC for more details and a registration form that
you can fill in.
